Blown Engine 2013 BMW X3

Asked by Sharon Jun 18, 2020 at 02:24 PM about the 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car stop while driving through the
neighborhood. The check engine light appeared as
the car stopped on the street. I was lucky no one
was behind me. It was towed to the BMW
dealership and I was told a blown engine block. I
have owen my BMW for 7 years. It was no longer
under warranty. They told me 13,000 dollars,
which I though that is crazy. So, within a few days
I sold the body for a few thousand dollars and
brought a new car. I am done with BMW. I have
always taken my car to BMW for service. And to be
told no oil in my engine and they did the oil
change. I am done with BMW. It sounds like to me
they knew the engine has issues.

Apparently you never check the oil level. At least part of this problem was your fault.

Yes, the N20 engine was known to have timing tensioner guide issues that would destroy the guides and they would break apart into the engine. Usually around 70K miles and you would hear a noise before failure. BMW even extended the warranty to a certain point. You could have replaced the timing chain and associated parts earlier to avoid it. Always do your research before buying any vehicle.
