BMW X3 2013

Asked by Sep 02, 2019 at 11:39 PM about the 2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My BMW X3 2013 with 50,000 miles started
smoking after an oil change, and has
continued. It’s only on start up, and worsens
if the car hasn’t been driven in a few days.
The smoke is bluish white and comes out in a
big puff and then it dissipates. I opened the
hood and noticed a small amount of oil
oozing around the oil filter. I’ve also noticed
black soot on the back end of the car.
Checked the oil and it’s not milky. I have had
to replace coolant more frequently than
normal I twice in a year. Any

I suspect you only noticed this after the recent oil change, but it has been going on for a while. The blue smoke is oil. It's probably leaking through worn valve seals or maybe worn piston rings. It could be getting sucked into combustion through a defective PCV system, but then you'd see a warning light. Have a BMW certified mechanic diagnose this; it might be a common issue with cars like yours.
