In 2010 it was a division of GM. GT stands for Grand Touring.
Pontiac was legend in racing in the "50s & "60s, but they got abused by GM, their parent corporation, as they were looked at as a corporate outsider. I raced Chevys & Pontiacs and loved Pontiac engines. Well when GM got an excuse to end Pontiac, that's what they did. Of course, by the "80s, Pontiac was really no different from Oldsmobile or Buick..... Yes, that GT stands for Grand Touring, a moniker that originated in European streetable performance cars.
Make is discontinued. Was by General Motors for many years till about 2009, was last model year.
