not charging

our dad has a kit car that is on a older vw chassis ,m around a 85 I think, there is no alternator in it , the battery wont stay charged and its only a year old, a friend told me  if you put a new battery in it you might have to remarry the voltage regulator to the generator ,have no idea how to do this not mechanical inclined

Why not just do the generator to alternator conversion? Plenty of how to guides online.
