My generator isn't charging my 1970 vw beetle

Asked by Guru9N1WSK Feb 12, 2022 at 08:31 PM about the 1970 Volkswagen Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 1970 VW beetle and my battery isn't charging. I've bought and
polarized my generator and I've also bought a new voltage regulator. Is there
anything that I can do to fix it?

Sounds like you need some basic electric knowledge , if you don't have a multi tester that would be a good place to start . Some of those things are + ground .

I think your vehicle my have an alternator instead of a generator and it sounds like it is going bad and not supplying enough power to start the engine and recharge it when it tries. At rest, measure the voltage at the battery. Unless it is a 6 volt system, it should measure about 12-14 volts. Not sure what a 6 volt system will measure but probably around 6-8 volts. If they show OK, try a new or different battery. If not, swap out the alternator / generator after checking all connections to be certain they are tight and clean..
