vw not getting in fire????

driving my 98 vw beetle it went dead on side of interstate. towed home can't get it to start.  If acts like its out of gas.  checked the timing belt, not that.  what should I check ? its not getting fire.

Check the oil level,it sounds rediculous the 98 is equipped w a cut of for spark to prevent seizing engine. If oil is good scan it w a scan tool see if you have communication if not check fuses,one will say engine,ecm, or such.
