Subaru engine shaking

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2012 Subaru Forester with 140,000 has recently
started shaking when at idle. It also sometimes has
a (what I think is engine clicking but I could be
wrong) and loud engine click while accelerating. I’ve
also noticed it’s using up a lot of oil. Enough that I
have to top off every 1200 miles or so.

Thoughts?

if clicking on and off non stop check egr valve gasket or valve its self

The oil consumption issue is common but the rough idle may be from bad plugs or coils. Is the check engine light on?

A loud clicking from the engine could be a serious mechanical defect. I would have a qualified mechanic take a look at it ASAP.

Assuming the EB25 motor, first check plugs and wires for misfire. If you find a black, wet plug that's a strong hint that either that wire (or the coil pack) is firing intermittently. Swap the wire with its neighbor and retest. If ok you simply had a wire dressed too closely to exposed metal (common), causing misfire from arcing to ground. If this cylinder continues to misfire AFTER addressing plug/wire, and possibly swapping in a replacement coil, then you probably have a slipped valve component in the head (ouch!). This is relatively rare, but of course pricey to fix, as the head has to come out and be rebuilt. This is perhaps a production error, but seems more common with 2010-2012 end of the era production of this older 2.5i. It's unlikely to be bad mounts nor the egr valve, but it's easy enough to clean/replace the $2 EGR valve, so you might as well do that, too. But it's probably ok. Note that a qt/1200mi consumption of 0w20 is not rare. Switch to 5w30 winter and 10w40 summer to reduce consumption once you're all done.
