Subaru Forester engine

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Subaru Forester that won't stop
overheating. I've already spent $2400 on a head
gasket/timing belt/ water pump job. I also have a
2010 Forester that is totalled but the motor is
good. Will the 2010 motor fit into the 2001?

Yes. But before transplanting the heart, check that the coolant plumbing is all ok: First, back-flush the rear heater hoses to assure there's no blockage; same with radiator, inc cleaning exterior debris; assure that t-stat is the original large-bore OE type. If percolation continues then indeed you've blown HGs. Possibly the heads weren't checked for flatness the first time, or torqued incorrectly. It happens. That said, a 19 yr old F is a poor candidate for investment, eh? Here in the rustbelt we toss most mid-noughts Subies quickly. Good luck. Ern TSG/B

I’ve only known 99-05/06 as interchangeable. How much more work is that for the 2010 to swap Ern?
