Subaru engine light on.

Asked by Billy Feb 27, 2015 at 01:07 PM about the 2010 Subaru Forester 2.5 X Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

During the cold months my Forester's engine light will come on along with flashing cruise.
Code is for bad converter.  0420 I think.  The light stays on for 50 to 80 miles and then
goes off and will come back on after another 50 miles.  Any clues as to why?  When the
weather warms up the problem disappears.  It is very annoying; I thought Subaru's were
built for cold weather.

You can search around on forester or Subaru forums (like nasioc) for the fix. The flashing is to warn you that your converter may be harmed by the way the engine is running and not completely burning all / most of the fuel in the air stream. I don't know if it is one issue or several as I've not done any real amount of research on the emissions issue you are having.
