Is the steering wheel turned to one side ? May be a bad solenoid that releases the shifter . There may be an over ride technique where you insert a pin into a small hole or something

It's a fourteen year old car, and things just happen. Likely, the shift lock solenoid is just bad or the shift linkage is out of adjustment. It's a console shifter, so there'll be a small hole or plug to reach the override. Stick in a pin to push it to release the shifter, and until it's repaired, just park the car in neutral with parking brake applied.

Turn the ignition on, do not start the engine, step on the brake pedal and listen for a solenoid click sound if you hear the click then the park release solenoid is getting power but it not releasing the lockouts and then you need to start disassembling the lockout system. But if you don't hear the click then there is no power, as this system gets power from the brake lights so a quick check to see of the brake lights are working is in order, if no brake lights, then check for blown fuses if no fuses are blown then move onto wiring issues.
