Dashboard lights going off and on

All of my dash lights come on at once and
some go off on their own, others stay on
and will eventually go off by themselves.  
When it happens, all of my guages go to "0".  
Can a weak battery or alternator cause
these issues.  Evey now and then it will drag
when I try to start it and sometimes just die
upon changing into drive.   The car doesn't
seem to run any differently when the lights
come on and guages drop to "0".  Any ideas
on the cause of this?

It could be a bad battery or charging system. I have seen that before. You'll need to get them checked to be sure. As for stalling when you put it in drive, could be caused by same issue or may be another by itself. Hard to tell these things without doing a diagnostic.

A weak battery can cause a lot of different problems on our platform. The other thing that would cause your dash to go wacky is the ignition switch. If you have a multi-meter, check the battery while running, if it's around 14v+, likely the alternator is just fine. Measure the battery again with engine off. Should be very close to 12, if not have your battery AND alternator checked for free at an autoparts store.
