does the '96 Maxima SE have a timimg belt or a chain and if it's a chain, does it need to be replaced at any recommended interval?

its a timing chain and you could look at it but it may never have to be replaced being a chain in all and it has its own houseing

yes it has a chain and no it does not need replacing. there are no service time intervals on it .in less you can hear it making a lot of noise then i would replace the chain and all the sprockets and tensioner and water pump at the same time. if you keep the oil and filter change every 3000.miles and keep it serviced you can expected to get 300,000 miles on it ,i know i do all my own work on mine has 300,000 +and still running strong good luck
