Is front catalytic converter gasket bad ?

My car rattles in the front...sounds like
it comes from engine block...but also
was told it was the cat. Someone
pointed out that around the top of front
cat that the heat shield or gasket may
need changed. There was some black
soot just on the top part. Could that be
fixed without changing the whole front
cat? Need help !

Every catalyst that I have came across in my years that rattled need replaced as they have came loose internally.
