temp light stays on when ignition is turned on. How to fix problem?

A "71s a pretty basic truck. It's likely just a faulty sending unit or a worn/shorted wire.

Unplug the temperature switch and if the light goes out then you have a shorted sender, if the light stays on then you have a grounded sender wire.
