My window was working fine, but lately as the  window neared the top
position, it would make a loud noise as though the gear was skipping over a
tooth! I'm able to close the window the remaining 1/2 inch by hand and then
run the motor until it seats, but eventually it loses its perfect seal.  Is there a
problem with the motor?  The window is seated perfectly in the track and in
the regulator and all mounting bolts are secured tightly..

Many use a "current sensing" device that detects high current when them motor stalls at the end of travel... Nissan uses the body module and the drivers side control to stop the window. An older model like yours probably uses current sensing and from what U say the problem is mechanical not electrical
