I'm thinking there was a brief overload/shorted circuit that resolved itself by burning out a fuse. You might want to watch for something electrical that no longer works. Also keep an eye on the battery performance as an internal short will do this. The alternator might be okay if the charging voltage returned to normal of 14 volts.

If the gauge is pegged it means the alternator is putting out too much voltage. This can damage things if it get much over 17 volts. Get the alternator tested.
