1988 5.7L C/K No compression

Asked by GuruMJYNT Jun 01, 2020 at 12:54 AM about the 1988 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1988 5.7L C/K with all new lifters and "recycled" a few push rods & a few rocker studs replaced. Tightened rockers until push rods quit turning, then 3/4 turn again. Rockers working but no compression. Owner/buddy is a single dad and needs his truck and I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Sounds like your valves no longer are contacting the valve seats.

No compression. The lifters were fine until the owner tried to torque the rockers, then retorqued them again, then retorqued them again... using a Chiltons and various Youtubes. In the process he bent rods and snapped a piece of a lifter. Various online advice we find say tighten until rods have slight resistance on the rod; tighten until rods won't turn; or tighten until rocker has no play. Then either turn rocker nut back off 1/8-1/4 turn; tighten an additional 1/2, 3/4, or 1 full turn. Depending on the source. Rockers are working but no compression. Valve adjustment the problem?
