Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Is a 1988 s10 700r4 the same as a 1987 k5 700r4

That depends on the motor in the S10, if 4.3 then yes they are the same, but if the S10 has a 2.8 then they have different bell housings. In other words the "K case" won't fit a 2.8L S10. Also the K5s will shift harder, it has extra clutch packs. It's not too difficult to modify a K case to fit an S10 however. If you can't find exactly what you need to swap out trannys, consider rebuilding it as 700R4s are worth hanging on to.
