up, drive about 1 mile it dies, wait a minute
it starts up same thing happens. I've put 3
new HEI distributors in it real run great for
approximately 15 miles or so then it starts
dying, also if I drive slow stay in 2 gear it

What brand is the HEI units?
Are you also replacing the pickup coil, if not do so,
Check to see if it has the ground strap that goes to the coil from the center terminal. Sometimes people that are not aware will leave this piece out. Or loose wire going to the distributor. Especially if the clip that holds it on the distributor has been broken.
