Tire pressure sensors

Asked by CarGuyJim12253 Nov 16, 2016 at 09:49 PM about the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Can I replace my summer only tires and
wheels with pressure sensors with winter
tires and wheels with no pressure sensors?
What will the computer read out?   Will it
go back to normal when I put the summer
tires back on?  Thank you!

Your TPMS sensors are mounted on the rims and as long as you keep the rims with the replacement tires in the same position (meaning not rotating them) it should not throw off the CPU. I recommend doing it in a place like Midas or other tire shop that has a programming tool for the sensors just in case the TPMS sensors lose communication when the tires are replaced. They usually don't charge extra for the programming as long as they perform the mounting and dismounting of the tires, Good luck, George

you can swap rims and tires without sensors , but your light will remain on , unless you keep the tires with sensors in your trunk.

Just traded my SUV (got amazing help here two yrs ago!)... Anyway, I did not put TPS sensors on winter rims because it was going to cost another $250; in hind sight I should have because it will cost a lot more now. Do I need to use only OEM sensors for the year? Or is it the frequency that is key? We have a 2017 Mitsubishi and I see sensors for Jeep and Mitsubishi advertised together (and a lot cheaper). It is the compatibility of off brand non OEM sensors that I need to know about... There is a caveat (later).
