What happens if jumper cables are hooked up in reverse

We were trying to jump the car and hooked up the battery cables in reverse

Most newer cars won't get any or little damage. The OB computer is well protected as are most of the electronics ... It would vary from car to car but I suspect the rectifiers inside the alternator or ...ARGH .. The sound system could get damaged ... it's something where every car may react differently
