Can I drive in reverse in 4H?

Asked by Topher64 Aug 16, 2020 at 05:53 PM about the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS Crew Cab RWD

Question type: General

I recently purchased a 2015 Chevy Silverado. I
was hauling 37 block in the back. I had it in 4h
on the highway. We passed our turn at one
point and I put it in reverse. I backed up and
then I heard a clunk in the rear end. Did I just
screw up my differential and transmission?

If you are driving in 4 high you are going to break something. Always drive in 2H on dry pavement.

Put it in 2WD and drive it around, reverse it etc and see if it drives OK. Hopefully it was only a little binding. What causes serious binding is sharp turns on dry pavement in 4WD. The added load gave you more traction which would make the binding worse.
