350 with ticking under valve cover and knocking in engine block

Asked by Gdmc24 Aug 06, 2016 at 04:01 AM about the 1985 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hey, my 350 motor is ticking under valve cover, and
knocking in the engine block, quiet at idle, gets
louder while driving, I'm wondering what the issues
may be? Thanks in advance

Old tired engine- it could live for awhile with the ticking, but the knocking is probably a rod- which if you keep driving it will come flying out through the side of the block- you need a new engine- or a rebuild, your choice- if you ruin the block, there will be no choice-

low on oil or incorrect rocker arm/valve tappet clearance adjustment- check oil then perform gap adjustment btwn rocker arms and valve tappets. oh, BEFORE you do that, unbolt and remove rocker arms and pushrods, roll pushrods on flat surface checking for any bends, then replace in EXACT order of removal. if none of this works, refer to answer #1
