Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 dodge Durango,  some times it taps
when I first start it, other times it doesn't... car
place said I needed to replace my engine..  my
question is,  how long will the engine last before it
locks up??? Btw, the oil gage bounces up and
down, from normal to zero constantly.

No one has an answer. It can fail tomorrow or three years from now. Keep oil in the engine to the fill line if it is leaking out. But it does sound like you have a worn out engine, they don't last forever.
