engine light flashing, engine running very rough, no power

you may be able to confirm a converter problem by lostening the exhaust in front of the converter enough to allow exhaust to escape. if the engine now has power, replace the converter and give the car a thorough check for faults that could have caused this to happen other than high miles. any other codes stored ?
