Low fluid will affect reverse before drive, and a fluid pressure problem usually affects forward gears as well as reverse. But as this is a common problem with your car, I believe you have a problem with the mechatronic seal. In older BMWs, it gets dry & brittle, then leaks pressure so the transmission gets fluid force in both directions. You'll likely have to replace both the seal and the adapter at a cost of about $1,000.
