Loose or cracked gas cap = inconsistent performance?

Apart from ALL my other problems I am having, I was wondering if a cracked or loose gas cap can cause inconsistent performance in my car, or any car for that matter. The performance from my car is different from start up to start up and VERY unpredictable. I noticed that sometimes if I push real hard on the gas cap as I tighten it after putting Premium gas in my tank (since I only use Premium) it has more predictable and better performance. Coincidence or cause?

Very well could be the cause. Today's vehicles need to have good sealing gas caps to preform properly.
