gas gauge

Asked by GuruVCXW2 Aug 19, 2018 at 05:05 PM about the 2002 Nissan Maxima SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Gas gauge reads 1/2 full but then unexpectedly drops to empty because it is
really empty, leaving me stuck on the road. What part/repair is necessary?

Probably a bad fuel level sensor. My truck currently has this problem and until I get around to fixing it I fill up more often and reset the trip meter at each fill up so I know how many miles I have driven on the current tank of gas.

"bad fuel level sensor" or is that called "a fuel level sending unit". I just tried to find that at ROCK AUTO and they only have a FUEL SENDING UNIT REPAIR LINE & A FUEL SENDING UNIT GASKET

O.K., But where can this item be purchased? As I said even ROCK AUTO does NOT have this. They only have a GAS LINE REPAIR &/or A SENDING UNIT GASKET replacment
