New key fob programmed, turns car on, but won't start.

Asked by Megan May 03, 2022 at 07:21 PM about the 2010 Ford Taurus SEL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our key was stolen so we had new key
programmed to the car. The buttons work (it will
lock, unlock, etc.) But it won't start the car. It just
says system start failure. The dash lights turn on
and the security light even turns off. We had
mechanics take a look and they said they could
manually crank the car over just fine and it appears
the car computer does nothing to start the car. So
it has to be an issue with the programming, right?
Even if the car detects the key?

If the check engine light is on for any reason the remote start feature will be disabled. I'm also assuming you didn't have the new key programmed at the Ford Dealer. That was a mistake! The more sophisticated vehicles get the less likely it is that shops other than the Dealer will be able to fix them. Especially when the electronics of the vehicle are involved! So visit your local Ford Dealer and let them do the programming correctly. Hope that helps! Jim

We called the dealer first and they said they'd be unable to program it as they can only have keys/codes as far as 10 years back. They were the ones who told us only a locksmith can do it. But the check engine light is on. We don't know why and it hadn't been on before the key was programmed.

Visit your local auto parts store and have them scan the computer for trouble codes. With the check engine light on there's at least one code stored in the computer. That's why the remote start feature is disabled. Most auto parts stores will do the scan for free. Hope that helps! Jim

For future reference and anyone who may run into this problem, we found out what was wrong. It turns out the car needs two keys paired to it to start, otherwise it thinks it's being stolen and security prevents starting. Once we got a second key paired, everything worked just fine.
