2005 Audi A4 wont start

Asked by looknferhelp Aug 30, 2015 at 12:10 AM about the 2005 Audi A4 2.0T quattro Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While driving, the engine stopped running. The I pulled over on the highway shoulder to await help. The car was moved to a parking lot for overnight. I really hope it starts tomorrow morning cause I really don't know where to begin. The battery is fine, fuel tank says just under 1/2 but far from empty. The starter cranks just as it should but to no avail. Apparently the engine uses a timing belt, which I believe is about 25,000 miles over due from replacement. Is this an "interference engine" and what's the possibility that there is damage to the valves assuming the belt broke which I doubt.

he A4 2.0T FSI is an interference engine (a.k.a. non-clearance engine). it posibility is great that there is valve to piston damage but I have seen people get lucky. sense you have turned it over already you are already done if it is so feel free to turn it over again. this time pull the oil fill cap off and see if you can see the valve rail if you can have some one turn it over and see it the rail or other thins inside the cove move. if you can not see this there might be an inspection spot in the timing cover so you can see or you can just pull the valve cover off and see. if it is the timing belt have put a new belt on it and run a compression test and see if there is no compression or really low look at doing a head and valve job.

this is like a "worst case" scenario- first, it's an Audi- second, you didn't replace the timing belt- I really hope you get lucky, but you have gone a long way down the wrong road-

If its a timing belt the snapped you would most likely have heard a lot of noise from the engine as it worked its miracles of damage. Best to pull back a timing belt cover and check for the belt. If it is tight and looks fine you most likely have another issue. so the biggest thing you need to do and confirm with us is if that belt has snapped or not.

As was said before check the timing belt. I had a similar problem on an 06 A4 and had to replace the cam lobes/lifters. They were too worn to properly operate the intake and exhaust valves so the engine wouldn't run, $1200 fix but better than having to get a new engine or car.
