1998 Chevy 3500 AC unit

Asked by Dan Nov 18, 2018 at 08:02 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet C/K 3500 Cheyenne Extended Cab LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My AC unit has quit working for my 1998 Chevy 3500. Been checked out by the
mechanic that provides maintenance for all our cars. They said to replace the
ac unit could cost upwards of $2500. It would be cheaper than buying a new
truck but my question is would it be worth it? Should I add an after market unit?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

After market would be cheaper, but make sure you change the dryer assembly all so,most will not warranty the compressor with out doing it.

Thank you for your answer. The mechanic where I take my vehicles (been going to them for over 30 years) said that even if they replace the whole thing it still may not be that efficient as an AC unit. It didn't put out real cold air as our 4 Runner does but it kept the temperature at least decent in the cab. The one mechanic said, since it has just over 98,000 miles on that if it were him, he wouldn't have it replaced. Just looking for another opinion that either confirms that or not. My wife wants to buy another truck but I choke when I see the prices. We pull our RV with it and during the summer have to leave earlier in the morning to avoid the heat. Sorry I didn't explain myself better on my first question. Thank you for your consideration.
