1992 Saturn Oil Viscosity

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I got my 1992 Saturn SL from a friend sans the owners manual.  What kind of oil do I need to be putting in there?  I've been using 10-40.  I hope that's right!!

10w-40 is fine for warmer weather, but when it's cold outside use 5w-40. The 5w-40 is thinner oil, which makes it easier for the engine to crank over when it's cold out side. Infact if you live somewhere it's really cold then you should use 0w-40 oil. And 10w-40 is fine for warmer weather, but so is 5w-40. In fact check the oil cap, and it should say SAE 5w-40. That cap is just saying that 5w-40 meets the standards for motor oil for that car.
