Gas cap light still on after installing new gas cap, why ?

Asked by Texasred Feb 12, 2012 at 07:30 PM about the 2007 Chrysler Sebring Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced gas cap with new gas cap from Chrysler. The gas cap warning light won't go off. What could it be ?

It can take a while for the sensor to reset, mine took 600 miles to go off. I had installed a locking cap from a prevous car that did not seal the Sebring system properly.

Sparky is correct sometimes repetitve cycles are needed to reset the fault. I usually will disconnect the positive lead in the engine compartment for a few minutes and that will reset the code or you can stop at auto zone, oriellys etc... somewhere like that and they will plug a reader in, check the code and reset it for you for free.

I am having a similar problem only worse. Gas cap light came on followed by check engine light. Put the reader on got codes that indicated small leak and gas cap problem. Smoke tested it and found no leaks. Have tried replacing the gas cap twice( 1 after market and 1Chrysler). Replaced pressure twice. Reset the codes, but gas cap remained. Expected it to reset after some driving distance. Check engine light soon followed. Will it reset after some driving distance?

I have a 2005 LeSabre that I changed caps on 5 TIMES this time last year. Had to do a code reset...it never went out on it's own. Check engine light always accompanied it. NOW, it is one year later EXACTLY and the same darn thing is happening. So annoying. Nothing seems to settle this car. Air bag light decided to come on 3 months after I got it and I know my dad never had a crash. I certainly haven't, but the light is on. WTH ;)

The Chrysler 200 has had a lot of quality problems with the sensor integrity module. If your problem does not correct itself as it is supposed to do after the fault is eliminated then I would look at the module.

I have a 2015 Chrysler 200 my fuel cap was On for about two days followed by a Check Engine light. Figured it might be the Cap. Jus replaced the Cap Sunday and it’s now Tuesday, light still On (both) will drive for a min and see if it turns Off. Will update..

Mine is still on.After replacing, the gas cap.Hopefully, that all it is.Replace it,before. They tested , it at AutoZone, and it is indeed a emission leak. However,I googled it,and it can be caused by other things, such as a bad vent.
