2004 Sebring Check Engine Light / Gas Cap

Hello!

I recently brought in my, new to me, Sebring to a mechanic for a once over.  
The car had a clean bill of health!  After the mechanic I went and filled up the
gas tank for the first time. After driving for about 10km my check engine light
went on. Since the only thing I ha ddone since having it in the shop was to fill
the tank, I re-adjusted it and on my next drive the light went out.  Today on
my way to work (the day after re-adjusting the cap) the light came back on
about half way through my drive.

Could this be the gas cap not sealing properly and needing replacement or
does it sound like there could be another issue?

Most likely it's the gas cap but it would show the same light for any other gasoline vapor leak in the fuel system. It senses these things by vapor (air) pressure. If you scan for codes it may show something slightly different like crack plastic or leaky/disconnected hose. Gas caps are so cheap I would just get a new one and see if that does it. Overall, it's not real serious.

Try some Vaseline around the seals and everything on the cap. Good sealant
