Question about 1998 BMW Z3 power mirrors

Asked by Jan 11, 2017 at 07:58 PM about the 1998 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a 1998 BMW Z3 Roadster 2.8. Both power mirrors work for side to side adjustment but neither work for up and down adjustment. The BMW dealer says both motors are bad. My question is that it is strange that both mirrors work side to side but not up and down. How likely is it that both motors would fail in the same manner. I feel that the problem is in the switch. What do you think?

That is what I kinda would think, but I would take the switch out and do some testing to see if it is the switch.

If the switch checks out, then I would recommend pulling/snap the mirror glass out of the mirror housing to reveal the motors and the motor wiring. You might find that the wire connectors and terminal plugs are corroded if not just dirty. Take them all off and clean with some electrical contact cleaner and put them back together. You can check youtube on how to take the mirror glass out.
