Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have code # P1397 camshaft position sensor that won't go away. I replaced
camshaft position sensor multiple times with BMW original part and the code
keeps coming back after second ignition start. any help is much appreciated.

Thank you for answering my question. I have all the factory BMW tools to install the camshaft chain and VANOS. If I had a timing issue there would be a code for the intake camshaft too. But, I found out that the signal from the exhaust cam sensor from a good running car with the same exact engine has the same exact signal that I have. I diagnosed the continuity of the yellow, brown, red, and white wires and the continuity was perfect to the DME. After further speculation I believe I must replace the DME. prior to this test I had replaced six sensors (2 BMW originals and 4 from SSF) and it didn't make any difference. I checked the gap between the intake cam sensor and the cam and between the exhaust sensor and the cam and I realized there was a gap of 30,000 of an inch. What do you think?
