Hello all, i have a beautiful X3 which i love.. there is
zero rust on it, no dings, no scratches (very hard to
find in MN) only paid 6,000 for it.  The wife and i
are considering just making the repairs to the head
gasket (potentially the engine) and rear drive shaft.
Its got 200,000 miles on it but has been kept in
extremely good condition until these recent issues.
Are we crazy for wanting to simply replace some of
the major guts? I Have a very mechanically inclined
father in law who rebuilds vintage VW's that is
willing to help me to save on labor by doing this in
his shop so it should cost time and parts

Yes crazy and sorry to say idiotic. $6,000 for a 2005 X3 with 200,000 miles on it?! Get your money back and run as far as you can. By the time you add up all the repairs and maintenance bills,this thing will cost more than double the $6000 the price you paid for this BMW.

Jon, thanks for the answer! Taking everything into account! After reading my original post i feel inclined to save face a little bit, i did not recently buy this for 6000 lol we bought it years back and have driven the hell out of it to get to the 200,000 mark while keeping regularly scheduled maintenance. I have some bad news to break to the wife i guess.
