My car cranks but won't start what might be the issue

Same with any no start situation , Check for proper spark , fuel pressure , injector pulse

Beyond the usual/general conditions that can cause an engine not to start, Mercedes had technical conditions, or over-technical conditions, that will lead to this problem. On a twelve year old ML. you need a Mercedes mechanic to sort all of this out.
