Hard to believe you have been riding around for 12 years without brake lights, so I doubt if it was not installed. These switches do go bad and is probably the cause of no longer having brake lights. Buy one and ask the dealer where to find the old one (usually under the dash at the brake pedal linkage).

Should try replacing bulbs first if you have been riding around with just one brake light working and not knowing it and the other one has been was working now it has burned out it will look like you are having trouble with the brake light switch but the problem is you have two burned out brake bulbs.
