Will newer wheels fit older truck?

Asked by GuruDY6BCT Apr 06, 2024 at 04:29 PM about the 1998 Ford F-150 XL SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 98 F150 2 Wheel Dr. and I have a set of wheels off of a later model

expedition.  My truck has the 12 mm studs and I was wondering if that would

be an issue with the expedition having 14 mm studs, making the hole sloppy

for the studs.

If you have the truck and the newer rims, why don't you try the fit? If they bolt on, that's a start. rim design isn't just the lug pattern, but the rim diameter, bead width and offset. the best way to see, is to measure them. BTW, An offset that's incorrect won't affect the rear wheels on a 2WD so much, but will cause undue wear on the front axle bearings.

Thank you those are some things that I did not know. So the holes being 14 mm and the lugs 12 mm makes no difference?

Rims are measured by bolt pattern diameter drawn from the center of the hole/bolt . A 4 bolt pattern is easy but a 5 bolt pattern is something different . There are web sites ( edmonds ) that will list those BPD's . and like Ed said there's back sets , caliper clearance , rim depth and the center hole may be a thing on some trucks . I lay a piece of stiff paper against the rim and draw a pattern and use that against other rims . There may be chrysler rims or even honda that will fit that ford .
