Brakes wearing out to fast

Asked by Billburleson May 17, 2020 at 07:18 PM about the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Chevy avalanche and I have had to
do brake jobs more and more frequent. It's not just
the front but the whole unit. I have cleaned and
greased the slides and at first you smell brakes
allot but short time later metal on metal, last job
3078 miles. Can't afford to drive it if they keep
getting anymore frequent.

Even more likely ceased calipers that aren't releasing properly. That would explain the smell. They're probably running super hot.

Calipers sounds correct after talking to a professional face to face. Explained how dust ect building up under boots will keep them from returning to total brake off position.

Plan to do rotors at the same time. All the extra heat yours have been exposed to will not have done them any favors. Even if they don't feel warped and aren't chewed up from worn out pads, they develop hard spots in the metal from all the heating and cooling and they will wear unevenly and cause vibration. Glad to hear you're making progress on this.
