how do you switch into 4 wheel drive or do you just hit the automatic 4 wheel drive button?

Most vehicles these days are 'shift-on-the-fly'. So yes, hit the button and you're good to go. The automatic 4x4 will put you into that mode when it senses that you need it.

Just push the button. You can switch between auto 4wd, 2wd and 4wd high while driving. 4wd low you need to stop and place in neutral before it will switch.
