2004 grand Prix Fuel/Brake lines rusted.

Asked by Batdaddy5656 Oct 28, 2018 at 05:46 AM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT1

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was shown(While on the rack) the fuel lines and brake lines are Badly
corroded/rusted in several places. Close tho engine the all looked in good
shape. In between in several placed they were indeed looking dangerous. I just
am curious if around a grand is too much for front to back replacement
including labor.

Are your brake lines leaking? External rust is common and not a direct reason to replace. They live in a dirty world! Check your fluid level and see if it is up to the full mark. If it is, no work is needed yet. Brake systems are designed so that the rear portion is independent of the front system. If one develops a leak, the other is sufficient to stop your car under normal conditions. It is not likely both systems will fail at the same time. Some shops tend to identify work that they would like to do but is not needed. If this shop is a known responsible business, you may want to go ahead with the repair. If not, shop around to other businesses and get other quotes and recommendations.

I agree with Taver. It could well be surface rust and that is all. Sounds like a shop trying to drum up work on a slow day. Neither of those systems are going to suddenly blow open and leave you stranded or put you in any sort of danger. They will start to seep or drip slightly way before anything serious happens. Keep an eye on things, including your wallet and you'll be fine.
