Car doesn't accelerate until I press really hard on the gas and then it goes, but with lots of difficulty; why?

Asked by kdobros2015 Nov 02, 2015 at 07:51 AM about the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 4 Dr GT Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 grand prix, automatic, V6, changed the battery and alternator
last year. So, I was driving, and stopped to drop someone off I was in park
for a minute or two and then when I put the car into drive and let go of the
brake the car didn't start moving slowly and spontaneously (like it usually
does). I then pressed the gas pedal normally and it wouldn't move until I
pressed it really hard, the RPMs were at 4000-5000, and that's how I had
to drive for a while until I parked. I could hear then engine running hard, as
if struggling. I got an oil change 2 weeks ago, at jiffy lube, and they refilled
all my fluids, but I didn't check any of them. Could it be something easy like
refilling some fluid or possibly something expensive that more expensive
than what the car is worth. I mostly want some ideas and possibly prices.
Has this happened to anyone else? Are you a mechanic, and this happens,
why?

Sounds like Trans ... if the car is not worth repairing then put some trans-medic in it ... be aware it may take a few days for it to start working

I agree. Check the fluid to make sure its not really low, but it sounds like the transmission is done. Save your money, if its that far gone no additive is going to fix it. Start shopping for another car.
