'00 Pontiac High Rpm's- Slow Accleration

Asked by PontGrl98 Mar 04, 2020 at 03:44 PM about the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE1

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2.4l, Grand Am randomly starts chugging at high RPM's
and won't accelerate like it should. No Codes! And there's a
slight knocking noise at front left side when this happens.
I've changed spark plugs, idle control valve, oil change, air
filter, tranny flush, ABS modulator changed because
mechanic said it was only issue he could find on scanner
and Still Does It! He said he checked the Cadilac Converter
was fine.  I can't afford this. Its already cost me over 2
grand! Please any help would be appreciated.

Stick with the electrical components and forget about oil, coolant, trans, etc. Have you changed the spark plug wires or other components that carry or generate spark for the cylinders? How about coils? Does the car use a distributor and rotor or coil packs on each cylinder? The noise is probably generated by a misfire and will go away when the misfire is cured.

Yes the spark plugs were changed. I'm not sure if my car uses a distributor, rotor or coil. Ok But wouldn't a misfire show up on a scanner tool ? There is No codes. The only thing that showed up was the wheel sensing hub and abs I got the abs modulator changed and now the senor associated with the abs modulator.

This may be a failing catalytic converter in your exhaust. They fail and get plugged causing high back pressure that would cause the lack of power and poor acceleration.
