I have an overheating problem.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I removed the top radiator hose at the radiator, little to no water came through
this with engine running at operating temp.  Eliminated the water pump and
thermostat as cause.  What else can it be?

I'd use a clear hose to see if the water pump was working at the heater core hoses , Did you test the thermostat in a pan of boiling water ? Is the exhaust white ? Is there goop under the oil fill cap ? Do a compression test or block test that checks for exhaust gases in the coolant system to see if you have a head gasket problem ..

If you let the cooling system get very low on coolant there's a special way you need to refill the cooling system. With the engine cold remove the cap from the plastic coolant recovery tank. Remove the upper radiator hose with the thermostat housing attached. Remove the thermostat. Add coolant directly into the engine through the hole where the thermostat goes. Continue adding until the engine is full. Install the thermostat and the upper radiator hose. Top off the plastic recovery tank if needed. Leave the cap off and start the engine. If the coolant level drops keep topping off the recovery tank to the full line until the level stops dropping. Your cooling system is now completely and correctly full! Hope that helps! Jim

To Beat Up Chevy: You asked "is the exhaust white?" Is white good or bad? Mine is just slightly, very slightly, sooty. I take that as good on this old a car. There is almost no goop under the oil filler cap.
