Overheated, now won't start

Asked by Don Oct 01, 2015 at 08:59 AM about the 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My son's1997 cavalier overheated. We changed the
water pump and new fan. Now it cranks, gets fire
and fuel, but doesn't try to start. I've tried to get the
anti theft light to go out, but it stays on. When it
cranked, water shot from the side of the radiator.

I think the first thing you need to do is get the anti theft light to go out. That may be your problem, but you cant' move forward until that is out. I think a dealer will be able to fix that for you..

Two types of anti-theft on 90's series Cavalier's. One was for the radio, so no big deal if you can't find the radio unlock code-just replace the entire stereo. If it's the ECM anti-theft, then you'll either need to correct it by using the proper ignition key that has the immobilizer chip in it (and not the valet keys or plain metal keys), or check ebay for an aftermarket immobilizer kit, about $20-30 at the most to bybass the factory theft-deterrent. Very common install for imports like the 90's Honda Accord, etc.
