2002 impala when the temperature reaches 140°
the engine starts cutting out and sounding like it

Is it overdue for a tuneup and filter change?

That would be a good start. After you have that work done have all the trouble codes cleared (if any) and drive it for a while. If the check engine light comes on have the codes read and post them here.
