Did the 1968 GTO with automatic transmission, have the option to put shifter on the steering column? Saw one at an auto show.

Not that I recall and I owned four between 64 and 68. If you bought the GTO option, it came with buckets and a floor shifter in both manual and automatic versions. Other models came with a standard column shift but could be optioned with a floor shift. The car you saw was likely a LeMans or Tempest with GTO equipment and badging.
There were a hand full with that option super rare I dought you have one it's probably a LeMans or tempest

If you opted for an automatic in your GTO, it came with a column shifter unless you also bought the optional console. Most ordered the console.
