Caravan sliding door.
A friend has a caravan. It’s a 2008 with a towing package. He regularly drives
off before the passenger side sliding door has fully closed. This causes the
door to re-open and is very unsafe. Can this be fixed?
could be that the door isn't latched and that's why it opens on take-off. Otherwise, it could be a damaged latch and that's all that needs to be repaired. Not a big item.
The latch has usually started to engage, or so it seems, but what prevents it from continuing to lock? Does the door motor have feedback that is sensing a false door opening pull so the door then starts to reopen?
If this is a power door, you realize that activating the motor to close the door while you're moving forward is adding a great stress to the motor operation, the door cable, and the rest of the system. Understanding that, the problem is probably not the latch malfunctioning, but the mechanism has been pushed out of adjustment and the doors now need to be readjusted. This isn't something a novice can doo properly; you should have a mechanic perform this.
Ed92626, Yes, the door is powered, and works correctly when the van is not moving. No door misalignment is visible. I agree with you about the added stress on the door components if the van is moving. Just glad it’s not my problem.
